The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History

With three impressive permanent collections and a membership in the prestigious Smithsonian Affiliations Program, the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History offers a wide range of exhibits, including a glimpse into the daily lives of soldiers during the Civil War; a reproduction of a turn-of-the-century locomotive factory; and an exciting depiction of the Civil War’s Great Locomotive Chase.

Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield is a 2,888 acre National Battlefield that preserves a Civil War battleground of the Atlanta Campaign. There are 17.3 miles of interpretive walking trails with historic earthworks, cannon emplacements and various interpretive signs. Facilities include a museum, gift shop and picnic areas/grills.

Located on the second floor of the historic Kennesaw House, the Marietta Museum of History houses the city’s extensive historical collections of photographs, artifacts on Marietta and North Georgia.

 

 

Marietta National Military Cemetery

The Marietta National Military Cemetery is the final resting place for over 10,000 union soldiers who fell during the Atlanta campaign of the Civil War.

 

Marietta Confederate Cemetery

The Marietta Confederate Cemetery is the final resting place for Confederate soldiers from nearby hospitals and the military operations around Marietta including the Battle of Kolb's Farm and the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.

 

 

The Historic Village at Life University

Visitors to The Historic Village at Life University can see a 19th century log cabin, corncrib, tobacco barn, animal barn and a working grist mill with waterwheel among other structures.

Lake Allatoona, Lake Acworth and Lake Lanier

 

Easily accessibile from Kennesaw are Lake Allatoona, Lake Acworth and Lake Lanier. Each of these recreation areas provide a wide array of sport and outdoor activities.

The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is a series of park lands stretching 48 miles along the Chattahoochee River, featuring hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, fishing spots and boat launches.

Red Top Mountain State Park

Named for the soil's rich red color, Red Top Mountain State Park was once an important mining area for iron. Today, the park is situated on 12,000-acre Lake Allatoona and features hiking, swimming, boating and fishing activities. Visitors can bring their own boats or rent from nearby marinas. The park also includes a 33-room lodge and restaurant.
