Mayor

Kennesaw's Mayor is the Chief Executive Officer of the City. The Mayor presides over all meetings of the City Council, votes only in the case of a tie and has veto power.

The Mayor appoints a member of the City Council to serve as chairman of each City department. Click here for department directory.

The Mayor executes contracts, deeds and other official documents as authorized by the City Council.

City Council

Each Council member is elected "at large" and serves over department assignments as made by the Mayor. Council members vote for the individual Council member to assume the position of Mayor Pro-Tem. The Mayor Pro-Tem assumes all the duties and powers of the Mayor in his/her absence.

The City Council executes all rights and powers granted the City through its city charter under the self-governing provisions of the Constitution and laws of the State of Georgia. The duties of the City Council include approving all City exenditures, setting the millage rate for property taxes, approving the City's budget, passing ordinances establishing policies and procedures and hearing all rezoning and annexation requests.

Each Council member is appointed by the Mayor to chair one of the six (6) major departments of the City. The following are the major City departments: Police, Community Development, General & Administrative, Public Works, Parks & Recreation, and Museum & Preservation Services.
